Oral Disease: Gingivitis

Gingivitis affects 90% of the population and is the most common periodontal disease. Gingivitis is am infection of the gums caused by the bacteria that forms plaque.

Plaque in small amounts ( when it's newly formed) is invisible and relatively  harmless. However, when it is not properly cleaned and left to accumulate, the volume increases as well as the proportion of bacteria. These bacteria release toxins that result in inflammation of the gum tissue. When left for a longer period of time the plaque hardens and forms hard deposits called calculus.

If not treated quickly and properly, gingivitis may progress to periodontitis, this is a  periodontal disease that can lead to bone loss around the area that supports your teeth.
