Other symptoms can include:
- Jaw pain or soreness
- Jaw pain while chewing, biting, or yawning
- Clicking, grinding, or popping noises when opening or closing the jaw
- Toothache or sensitivity with no evidence of dental problems
- Earache with out infection; or soreness in front of the ear
- Neck or shoulder aches
- Pain in the face or head regions
- Burning sensation in the mouth/tongue
- Grinding of the teeth
What is TMJ/TMD?
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, also known as TMJ or TMD. Can be caused by many factors and the exact cause is unknown. Factors include:
- Improper bite
- Injury to the jaw
- Arthritis
- Severe stress
- Mix of any factors listed above
Clenching or grinding, known as bruxism, may develop from stress or as part of a sleep disorder. This can tire muscles and create spasms, causing even more pain. Repeated muscle problems may affect the joints, resulting in tissue damage, muscle tenderness, and more spasms, ultimately perpetuating a cycle of pain.
