Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a potentially dangerous disorder with fairly benign symptoms such as loud snoring at night, morning headache or daytime bouts of sleepiness. The cause? Intermittent periods during your sleep cycle when you actually stop breathing. During sleep apnea, the upper air passages in the mouth and throat are obstructed; it has yet to be determined why this happens.
Breathing cessation, or apnea, can last from seconds up to nearly a minute. As you start to breath again, the brain senses the lack of oxygen and wakes you up. In the morning, the build up carbon dioxide in the blood causes headaches and the lack of deep sleep can leave you drowsy throughout the day.
A common form of treatment that has been proven successful is wearing an acrylic appliance during sleep to keep you air passages open. the appliance is comfortable and easy to use.
