Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)
Dry mouth is a common that affects 3 out of 10 Americans. As the natural flow of saliva is reduced, you can experience trouble swallowing, pain throughout oral tissues and, nearly always , a short-cut to dental caries and gum disease. Other side effects of dry mouth include, your tongue sticking, food having little to no taste, and digestion issues.
Xerostomia, or dry mouth syndrome, can come with aging or as a side effect of many medications. There is relief in the form of dry mouth toothpaste, special saliva-producing chewing or saliva substitute solutions.
Dry mouth is a common problem among seniors citizens. Many are on medications that create dryness of the mouth as a side effect. Without the natural benefit of saliva to decrease bacterial action, there can be an increase of cavities on root surfaces of these patients.
Anyone on a medication causing a dry mouth effect should be encouraged to regularly see their dentist for cleanings and fluoride rinses.
