Pregnancy Brain? More Like Pregnancy Teeth!
Many mommas-to-be experience dental issues during their pregnancy. Issues such as gum
disease, dental pains, tooth extractions or restorative work commonly seem to arise shortly
after falling pregnant. This is oftentimes seen as normal and even partially expected, but that i
s not the case. Any dental disease, such as infections of the teeth and/or gums, is not a
“normal” thing for any patient!
While being pregnant in itself doesn’t necessarily mean that you will find your once healthy mouth in shambles, the habits that can arise during pregnancy may lead to issues along the way. Something that is out of a pregnant woman’s control, though, are the hormonal changes that come along with it. Pregnant women have an influx of hormones within them, and these may make gums more susceptible to disease and infection.
Another thing that pregnant women may do, is eat smaller and more frequent meals throughout the day. The increased level of snack breaks lead to the gum tissues and teeth being exposed to more sugars and acids throughout the day. Along with the eating habits changing, the cravings that the changing hormones may bring along also affects the oral hygiene of the patient. The extreme sweets or super salty nibbles can potentially lead to the wearing down of enamel, which would evolve into dental pain and decay.
Pregnant women are advised to schedule a dental evaluation, and continue receiving preventative dental care. At these appointments, personalized instructions for care can be given to the expecting mother to ensure overall health for her and her baby!
