Who Runs The World

Who Runs The World?

In celebration of Mother’s Day this past weekend! It is important to celebrate the women in our lives, as well as recognize the accomplishments of women throughout history, today and every day. The first female dentist did not begin practicing until 1865, nearly 150 years after the dawn of modern dentistry (the basics of dental study can actually be dated back to as early as 5000 BC in Ancient Sumer!) Her name was Emeline Roberts, and she first grew interested in dentistry when she married her husband, Daniel Jones, who had his own dental practice. Her husband believed that women’s fingers were too “frail and clumsy” for dentistry. This only made Emeline more determined than ever. She decided that she would have to pursue her love for dentistry privately and on her own time. Only after she had filled and extracted several hundred teeth (in secret!) did her husband finally find out! To her great surprise, he allowed her to practice with him. After his death, she went on to take over his practice and continued to practice for over six decades. After this self-taught dentist had spent her life dedicated to perfecting her craft, in the year 1914, she was made an honorary member of the National Dental Association. During Emeline’s time, dental licenses were not a mandated certification. However, by 1935, every state required a dental license to practice dentistry.

Here at Prince Frederick Dental Center, we are lucky to have four incredible and inspiring female dentists. Dr. Firouzeh Tahvildary and Dr. Jennifer Nguyen are two of our four partners/co-owners of the practice. Dr. Stephanie Nunez is an associate general dentist who has her DDS and PhD, and is fluent in both English and Spanish. We are also lucky to have an in house endodontist (root canal specialist), Dr. Manila Joshi. All of our dentists take pride in ensuring that each and every one of their patients is treated with the utmost of care. Each of these women shows excellence and individualized care in their craft, truly showcasing what art form dentistry really is.
